Despite the differences, both films prove that its possible to honor one's family and ancestors while still following their own path. Coco emphasizes the importances of keeping ancestors alive through the memories and stories of the living, while The Book of Life focuses on following one's heart and supporting loved ones for who they really are. The movies share themes about family, but their approaches differ. Meanwhile, Manolo, who's been trying to live up to his father's expectations, must learn that being his true self is the best thing he can do for his family and himself. In both films, the aspiring musicians must learn to be true to who they are while also relying on their ancestors. Where Miguel does embrace his musical side, he also must come to appreciate his loved ones in life and death, keeping their memories alive through the coming generations. The Book of Life has the deities La Muerte and Xibalba place bets on who would win Maria's heart, with La Muerte favoring Manolo, a musician forced to follow in his father's footsteps as a bullfighter, and Xibalba choosing Joaquin, a soldier who wants to be a hero like his dad.
